There are several theories about the origin of the name Cabo Rojo. One of them is due to the reddish color that Christopher Columbus’ companions observed in the southwest area when they sailed around the island, and the reddish color of the water due to its concentration of salt. As a result of these characteristics it was called “the Red Cabos.” Another theory indicates that it is due to the red color of the rocky surface of the Morrillos terrain, where the lighthouse is located.
