La Calle del Tejadillo, This forgotten and abandoned street like many in the city, is worthy of us dedicating some memory to it. The name comes from the house commonly known as the “Virrey’s” house and which currently serves as a merchandise warehouse. At the entrance, a “roof” was built, which covered part of the roof of the building and protruded into the street and formed what we call a terrace. Older friends tell us that “the roof” stood out best when observing it from the corner of said street and that of the University. On the site of Dr. Irisarri’s family home, a cinema hall was inaugurated in 1914, which was called “El Virrey”, but it did not achieve greater success and was closed a year after arduous work. The “Viceroy’s” house has a long history that we regret not narrating in these notes. The Viceroy Don Manuel Antonio Florez lived there in the year 1778. Some historians maintain that the Viceroy who lived in said house was Don Sebastián de Eslava, and those who claim this are wrong, because the residence of this brave defender of Cartagena in 1741, It was the Hospital of San Juan de Dios where he helped treat the wounded who fell to the walls defending the city against Admiral Vernon’s cannons.
