Local oral legend indicates that the construction of Morocco’s largest erg – Erg Chebbi – was a punishment from God for a few wealthy families who refused to give shelter and feed a poor woman and her son during a local festival then that they played with couscous balls after having eaten well. They were buried by sand from continuous wind storms which formed large dunes, the highest of which measure approximately 160 m in height.
